For most requirements, if you need to use an RDM;  then you should think about using virtual compatibility mode. This will give you the capability to snapshot the volume thus enabling Veeam to backup it up. Only if you need access to physical characteristics of the underlying LUN and storage system would a physical RDM make the most sense.
